The Visa Dance

Posted by Louis | Wednesday, September 30, 2009 | | 0 comments »

Have you seen the Visa Commercial with a man dancing around the World?

He is Matt Harding.

Here's how it got started...

In February of 2003, Matt quit his job in Brisbane, Australia and used his savings to wander around Asia until it ran out.

A few months into his trip, while he is taking pictures in Hanoi, his friend said "Hey, why don't you stand over there and do that dance. I'll record it." He was referring to a particular dance that Matt does. It's actually the only dance Matt does. He does it badly. Anyway, this turned out to be a very good idea.

A couple years later, someone found the video online and passed it to someone else, who passed it to someone else...

Glories of Egypt – Alexandria

Posted by Louis | Tuesday, August 18, 2009 | | 0 comments »

Alexandria is the second-largest city in Egypt, and is the country's largest seaport. Alexandria is also an important tourist resort.

Alexandria is home to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the new Library of Alexandria), and is an important industrial center because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez, another city in Egypt. Alexandria was also an important trading post between Europe and Asia, because it profited from the easy overland connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

In ancient times, Alexandria was one of the most famous cities in the world. It remained Egypt's capital for nearly a thousand years, until the Muslim conquest of Egypt in 641 AD when a new capital was founded at Fustat (Fustat was later absorbed into Cairo).

Alexandria was known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the Library of Alexandria (the largest library in the ancient world) and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa (one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages).

Planning a trip to Egypt?

Cairo, is the capital city of Egypt, the largest city in Africa and the largest metropolitan area in Egypt. Al-Qahirah is the official name of the city in Arabic.

Cairo has long been the center of the region's cultural and artistic life, and has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab World, earning it the name of the "Hollywood of the East".

Take a look at the video preview of Cairo through the lens of my friend Patrick.

The Southern Ridges

Posted by Louis | Wednesday, July 02, 2008 | | 0 comments »

Whether you’re a sporty runner looking for a good workout and a breath of fresh air amidst the lush nature, or just someone seeking a leisurely stroll to enjoy the rich greenery of Singapore, the Southern Ridges has a lot to offer.

This 9km chain of green spaces spans across Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Kent Ridge Park and ends at West Coast Park, each seamlessly linked by foot trails and connection bridges.

Start off with a short walk through the secondary forests of Marang Trail from behind Harbourfront MRT Station to Mount Faber Park, one of the oldest parks in Singapore. Embark on the meandering trail of Faber Walk and take in the panoramic views of Singapore and the coastal seas, dotted by ships and islands.

Experience the giddy heights of the Henderson Waves, an undulating bridge that sits high across Henderson Road and connects Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park. It is also Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge.

From there, trek across Telok Blangah Hill Park through the Hilltop Walk. Brush past the thick canopy of trees and take a bird’s eye view of the forest as you continue along the raised walkways of the Forest Walk.

The opened leaf-shaped Alexandra Arch then welcomes you to HortPark – the gardening hub. Enjoy a delightful stroll down the Floral Walk lined with blooming flowers and pick up some gardening ideas at the Hort Park!

Finally, the Canopy Walk brings you through Kent Ridge Park’srich flora and fauna with an elevated walkway. Perched at a height of 16 metres at the centre, it’s the perfect spot to experience the tranquillity and beauty of nature as you catch glimpses of squirrels, sunbirds and white-crested thrushes among the groves of Tembusu and belukar trees.

The easiest way to get there:
By MRT: alight at Harbourfront station Exit D.

Christmas Island

Posted by Louis | Sunday, June 01, 2008 | | 0 comments »

Christmas Island was a small island territory of Singapore, now belongs to Australia. It’s home to about 1,500 people. Once a year, it’s also home to 150 million of red crabs.

They show up around November. Up the beach, through the fields, down the roads—they’re everywhere.

They come to the island to spawn. Each female crab can produce over 100,000 babies.

Singapore Flyer to Open on 1 March

Posted by Louis | Sunday, February 17, 2008 | | 0 comments »

Touted to be one of Asia's most visible iconic attractions, the 165-metre Singapore Flyer (with 28 capsules), which was built in just over two years, is said to be a key landmark at Marina Bay.

The visitors inside the capsules will get to enjoy a bird's eye view of Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

It's said to be a very slow ride that takes about 34 minutes to make a full revolution and you will almost feel that you are stationary."

Couples can also spend their Valentine's Day evening on the observation wheel, complete with champagne, chocolates and flowers.

The Flyer will open on 1 March. Different types of tickets are available.

The observation wheel forms part of a string of attractions at Marina Bay, including the integrated resort and the Gardens by the Bay.
